Leonardo joins forces with ST Engineering Antycip on Next-Gen Digital Systems

Leonardo has announced it will develop a next-generation digital system. The technology will enhance the company’s aircraft design capabilities of the future and strengthen Leonardo’s training value proposition with new and disruptive solutions. In a world of “digital first”, Leonardo is revolutionizing digital design and cadet training.

One of Leonardo’s goals is to continually strengthen its leading position as an aircraft integrator and training integrated systems and services provider. This is achieved through the adoption of a development approach based on the extensive use of the digital twin concept design. This includes leveraging the best technology available in the market, complemented by proprietary solutions, for all the components of the digital ecosystem, including gaming technology.

As a step forward in Leonardo’s overall digital strategy, which involves the company’s aircraft business, the company recently signed an agreement with ST Engineering Antycip to develop a Leonardo-customised version of an Image Generator based on the Unreal Engine provided by Epic Games. With Unreal Engine, Leonardo will bring incredible real-time experiences to life using the world’s most advanced 3D content creation tool, enabling realistic virtual environments, increasing the number of entities and complexity in the virtual scenario.

This new technology will greatly enhance all the training devices in Leonardo’s portfolio, starting with the full-flight simulators, flight training devices, procedural training devices and others, with an aim to reach innovative Mixed Reality and Virtual Reality devices to revolutionise the traditional training concept. Furthermore, the same technology will be a game changer for a set of ongoing advanced developments like the “wearable cockpit” in next generation combat and training aircraft.

This latest achievement was possible thanks to the strong cross-business synergies at Leonardo, involving the Aircraft and Leonardo Global Solutions teams in relation to the procurement of the best engineering services for the company.
