Rostec’s Technodinamika holding, which unites Russia’s major ammunition developers and manufacturers, has unveiled for the first time at the EDEX`21 expo in Cairo its cutting-edge high-performance 125 mm tank gun rounds, namely 3VBM23 Svinets-2 and 3VBM17 Mango-M.
Both rounds have the armor-piercing fin-stabilized discarding sabot (APFSDS) projectiles and are intended to defeat modern upgraded tanks fitted with complex composite armour, bar-slats, and explosive reactive armour.
Both Mango-M and Svinets-2 (Lead-2) took the center stage in the exposition of Technodinamilka’s artillery shells. According to the developers, their ability to penetrate armor has increased by more than 20% compared to the earlier versions. The rounds are said to ensure the defeat of almost the entire spectrum of armored vehicles from a distance of more than two kilometers.
The 3VBM23 Svinets-2 round with 3BM60 APFSDS projectile for the modernized 2A46M gun is capable of penetrating a homogenous armour plate of 300 mm thickness at a 2,000 m distance. The muzzle velocity is 1,660 m/s. The round weighs 22 kg, while the weight of the projectile is 8.4 kg. It can be operated at temperatures between -40 and +40.
The upgraded 3VBM17 Mango-M penetrates 280 mm armour (a 50 mm increase in comparison with the previous Mango round). One of the main advantages is the lack of necessity to make any changes to the design of the automatic loader of the T-72 and T-90 tanks. This can play a key role in the selection of the Mango-M by countries operating these MBTs.

In particular, this is due to the fact that the army is equipped with a large number of tanks, armored personnel carriers and howitzers of Russian and Soviet production.
