Petty Officer First Class Saman Gunan, 38, a former Royal Thai Navy member of the Navy Underwater Demolition Assault Unit (SEAL), lost his life during the operation to save 12 boys and their coach who had been trapped in the Tham Luang cave in Mae Sai district, Chiang Rai, Thailand.
Gunan selflessly came out of retirement to give his assistance to the rescue effort that developed to save the boys.
He lost consciousness during a dive to move divers’ air tanks through the cave system and did not recover.
Thanks to his efforts, the work of his colleagues in the Thai Armed Forces and international experts, all 12 boys and their coach were rescued from the cave system.
